Management of common minor injuries Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Management of common minor injuries - Essay Example Somatic pain that emanates from the skin, muscles, bones, ligaments, and joints can be regarded as the most prevalent form of pain encountered in musculoskeletal injuries. Somatic pain can be categorized into two types: deep and superficial. Usually, deep somatic pain is lasting and mainly indicative of sizable tissue damage to the internal joint structures/muscles (O'Connor 2013, p.87). Wrist and sprains have analogous signs and symptoms but differ anatomically. Wrist sprains and sprains mainly result from a fall onto an outstretched hand. The handââ¬â¢s position and/or rotation at point of impact determine the form of and severity of the injury. Complex wrist and hand anatomy can render a diagnosis of wrist injuries on a challenging task (Parmelee-Peters and Eathorne 2005, p.35). The scaphoid represents the most dominantly injured carpal bone, accounting for close to 70% of carpal fractures. The management of wrist injuries should encompass rehabilitation of muscles weakened and motion lost by pain, immobilization, and inflammation. The rehabilitation should respond to five goal-oriented phases: (1) minimizing pain and inflammation, as well as oedema, if present; (2) enhancing pain-free range of motion; (3) reinforcing and enhancing general condition; (4) enhancing coordination and flexibility; (5) returning to normal work with prevention of injury that may include utilization of protective equipment (Moulton and Yates 2012, p.125). Discussion Scenario 1: The immediate pain in the left wrist below the thumb could arise from sprained thumb injury sustained after the fall. A sprained thumb is a dominant cause of thumb pain and swelling. This may emanate from damage to the Ulnar Collateral Ligament at the base of the thumb. In cases where the patient experiences severe sprained thumb injuries, there is frequent immediate thumb swelling and bruising may develop. The capability to pinch grip small objects maybe frequently impaired owing to the resultant instability within the Meta-Carpo-Phalangeal (MCP joint). Diagnosis for sprained thumb made through physical examination, whereby stressing the Ulnar Collateral Ligament may reveal instability within the joint (Kamper, Mahoney, Nelson, and Peterson 2001, p.371). This can be confirmed by undertaking an x-ray while stressing the joint; nevertheless, x-ray evidence may not be always helpful in isolation. Sprains usually tend to resolve in a period of about 4-6 weeks and can be aided by physiotherapy treatment. Ultrasound can be an effective mode of assessment in the early stages, coupled with mobilization, can help

Our Greatest American President Essay Example for Free
Our Greatest American President Essay Franklin Delano Roosevelt became our thirty-second President in one of the most critical times in the history of the United States since the Civil War. Born to wealth, FDR held a sense of social importance at an early age. This attribute would soon become an important part of his political career. He was also faced with the despair of a devastating disease. Roosevelt was forced to view himself in a different perspective, however he took his illness and turned it into a way of helping others that were stricken with the same misfortune. This showed tremendous integrity in Roosevelt not only as a man but as a great President. During his tenure as Vice President, Roosevelt contracted the disease poliomyelitis and became completely paralyzed. This was one of the greatest obstacles that he had to face in his life, but he quickly overcame this hurdle and worked diligently to establish a foundation known as the March of Dimes to help other polio victims. Eventually, an effective vaccination was introduced. Roosevelt had married a distant cousin, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, who was able to provide much support in both his personal and political lives. The United States at the time was going through a critical period and the American family was important to everyone. Having a supportive first lady Roosevelt quickly gained the admiration of many Americans. The Great Depression had been present for almost three years and FDR had his work cut out for him. He had used the Great Depression as the back drop of his Presidential campaign and when he took office, he quickly set out to reform the economy and ââ¬Å"undertook immediate actions to initiate his New Deal. â⬠(fdrlibrary. marist. edu) There were some critics, but the majority of Americans welcomed Rooseveltââ¬â¢s policies. He set up a special session of congress that lasted 100 days and was geared towards the passage of legislation that created the Agriculture Adjustment Administration, to support farm prices, and the Civilian Conversation Corps, to employ young men. The country was faced with an unemployment rate of 30%, but FDRââ¬â¢s efforts proved his compassion for the American people and his empathy despite the fact of his privileged birth. Roosevelt had gained extreme popularity with the American people and easily attained the Presidency for a second term. Roosevelt was faced with offense from the Supreme Court stating that some of his New Deal policies went against the principles of the United States Constitution. Roosevelt attempted to add new justices to the Supreme Court that would be more tolerant of his policies. ââ¬Å"However, many even in his own party opposed him in this attempt to pack the court, and the Congress defeated it. â⬠(notablebiographies. com/Ro-Sc/Roosevelt-Franklin-D. html) This developed a bitter rapport between FDR and Congress. But, despite this scarred relationship, FDR ran for a third term. ââ¬Å"The presidential campaign of 1940 was the climax of Rooseveltââ¬â¢s plea that Americans set themselves against the Nazi threat. â⬠(notablebiographies. com/Ro-Sc/Roosevelt-Franklin-D. html) Roosevelt was certain that Adolf Hitler was a dangerous man who intended to conquer all of Europe. Americans remembered their disappointment after World War I, and there were many of them who leaned toward supporting the Germans rather than the group of countries known as the Allies. The Allied force consisted of: Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. Roosevelt had to promise the American people that young Americans would not be sent overseas in battle. Roosevelt won the third election but very narrowly. Not long into the third presidential term the United States was attacked. ââ¬Å"On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii, causing serious losses to American forces. â⬠(notablebiographies. com/Ro-Sc/Roosevelt-Franklin-D. html) Four days later Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. Although Roosevelt had set out to engage the United States in the war, he now had no choice. The mood of the American people also quickly changed. Congress immediately ââ¬Å"enacted a draft for military service and the ââ¬Å"lend-leaseâ⬠bill in March 1941 to enable the nation to furnish aid to nations at war with Germany and Italy. â⬠(fdrlibrary. marist. edu) The factories in the United States began producing as they had before the Great Depression. Roosevelt worked diligently with his military advisors exercising his powers as Commander-in-Chief. On January 1, 1942, the ââ¬Å"Grand Allianceâ⬠was created through a declaration of the United Nations. ââ¬Å"The United States and its allies invaded North Africa in November 1942 and Sicily and Italy in 1943. The D-Day landings on the Normandy beaches in France, June 6, 1944, were followed by the allied invasion of Germany six months later. â⬠(americanhistory. about. com/od/franklinroosevelt/p/pfdroosevelt. htm) In his third term as president, the Great Depression would come to an end, but FDR wanted to ensure that this devastation would not happen again. In 1934, he proposed a national social security system that, he hoped, would prevent another such depression. Citizens would never be without at least minimum incomes again, because the social security system (still used today) used money paid by employees and employers to provide support to those who were unemployed, retired, and disabled. â⬠(notablebiographies. com/Ro-Sc/Roosevelt-Franklin-D. html) Although Roosevelt had not actually fought in the war, he fought tremendously for it. By early 1944 Roosevelt had literally worn himself out. He won a fourth re-election easily, but because of his failing health, while vacationing in Warm Springs, Georgia, on April 12, 1945, he suffered a massive stroke and died. The United States, during Franklin Delano Rooseveltââ¬â¢s presidency, faced many similar situations that our county is once again facing. Because of FDRââ¬â¢s compassion, strength, character, and perseverance, we were able to overcome those obstacles and become a stronger nation. I can only hope that our current leadership will use the past as a guide to steer their actions and, once again, lead our country to more prosperous times. The Fight to Help the Snow Leopard Essay example -- Wildlife
An endangered species is ââ¬Å"any speciesâ⬠¦ that is at risk of extinction because of the sudden rapid decrease in its population or loss of its habitatâ⬠(Dublin, par. 1). An animal that falls under this category is the ââ¬Å"Panthera Unciaâ⬠(Dublin, par. 1) ââ¬âmore commonly known as the snow leopard. This animal is seen as a threat to many people in Central Asia ââ¬âthe natural habitat of the leopard. However, the conclusion is inaccurate. The snow leopard is a rare creature that is hardly seen by humans. This animal is insulated by thick fur and has tremendous paws that act like snow shoes. Snow leopards have powerful legs that allow them to jump up to at least fifty feet. Along with their unique body style, they have a long tail that helps keep their balance and can shield them from the cool mountain air (National Geographic, par. 1). This innocent animal is being destroyed by humanity. Humans are invading its home. Therefore, it needs help be fore it is too late. The snow leopard is a vital link in its natural habitat of Central Asia; immediate action must be taken by the world to prevent its extinction. The history of the snow leopard begins in1972, when it was first listed as an endangered species. There are several contributing factors to the endangerment of this beautiful mammal. These would include the destruction of their habitat and increased poaching. Although people have tried to resolve this problem, more needs to be done to save the snow leopard. The environment and habitat of the snow leopard is being ruined; consequently, resulting in their endangerment. The territory of the snow leopard is vanishing without anyone noticing. Education and Teaching - No Saturday Classes for Public Schools :: Argumentative Persuasive Essays
No Saturday School! Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Some people think American students should attend school on Saturday.Ã These people think that the extra day would bring America's education level closer to those of other countries. However, I disagree.Ã I think having school on Saturday would actually lower our education level. The Saturday classes would diminish family time for students.Ã The extra day of classes would cut down on work days for students.Ã Saturday classes would also mean one less day of rest for both students and teachers alike. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Less time with a family could lower a student's grade point average.Ã For some students, Saturday is the only time they can see family.Ã This would be true for students whose parents are divorced or who both work Monday through Friday.Ã Not seeing family could lead to a bad attitude or severe depression.Ã Some students have close relationships with their parents and want or need to spend time with their parents.Ã A student with a bad attitude or severe depression cannot learn well and perform well in class.Ã Not being able to learn well will not bring an already low education level up. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The extra day of school would cut down on work days for students.Ã A cut-down on work hours during the weekend could influence a student to work more late-night hours to earn money for car payments or college funds.Ã That would create a very tired, unprepared student.Ã That student, in turn, will not do well with school work.Ã The extra day of school would take away from any other job a teacher may have.Ã Some teachers have additional jobs to earn extra money. Less time to work another job could create a bad attitude.Ã A teacher with a bad attitude will not be able to teach effectively. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã One extra day of school cuts into precious relaxation time of students and teachers alike. Just one day may not sound like a lot; but, to a busy student, it could mean the difference between an A and a B.Ã That one extra day of rest can change an attitude easily.Ã With one day of rest and one more day to do homework, a student can have time to avoid a jam-packed schedule for a day.

How sawm shows devotion to god Essay
Sawm is the fourth pillar of Islam and is an important act of ibadah. The word ââ¬Å"Ramadanâ⬠comes from the Arabic root word for ââ¬Å"parched thirstâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sun-baked ground.â⬠It is expressive of the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in fasting. As opposed to other holidays, when people often indulge, Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice. The month of Ramadan is sacred because the first revelation of the Qurââ¬â¢an is said to have occurred during this month. By tradition the month starts with the sighting of the new moon by at least two Muslims. For the entire month, Muslims must fast from daybreak to sunset by refraining from eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse. It is an apparent sign of devotion as it shows obedience, submission and servitude to God, the Exalted. By fasting, a Muslim expresses his submission to Allahââ¬â¢s command, his response to His will, and control over his own desires and wishes at the Godââ¬â¢s command. In the holy month of Ramadan, a Muslimââ¬â¢s abstaining from food, drink, sexual intercourse, during the prescribed hours is the very manifestation of devotion to the Creatorââ¬â¢s will. This self-deprivation represents a state of self-control and of overcoming pleasure, desire, and enjoyment, for the blissful love of God. It is a triumph of pure love over oneââ¬â¢s pleasures for the eternal ones promised by God, the Almighty. This response to the Divine commandments represents and incarnates true devotion and is a brilliant display of spirit, intellect and decisive willpower. This purification allows them to prove their devotion to Allah by demonstrating they will honor the fast whether they are alone or with others, because it is His wish that they do so. Through fasting the Muslims are able to share in their unity with each other and their community, and display their gratitude to God for being given the words of the Qurââ¬â¢an. Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to their Creator, and recognize that everything we have in this life is a blessing from Him. Traditions (Hadith) succinctly explain this fact: ââ¬Å"A fasting person is in a state of worship, even when (asleep) in bed, except when he backbites about another Muslim.â⬠â⬠¦ Every breath you take is (has the reward of) Tasbih (praise to Allah) and your sleep is worshipâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ In a moving speech, the Prophet of Allah described the believing soul that fasts for love of Allah out of truthfulness and sincerity, and out of devotion for him then the whole day becomes an alter of worship, and each and every activity of the fasting body, provided it abstains from loathsome acts, is nothing but worship embodied. This is why Muslims become focused in Ramadan and carry out lots of Ibadah to gain reward and please Allah as we need him in our lives as he is that powerful and the guide The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) described the sleep of a fasting Muslim, even the very breathing, as acts of worship, because they emanate from a body regarded as being in a state of continual worship through abstaining from tasting delicious and lawful things, solely out of obedience and devotion to the Creator. He Himself extols fasting and attributes as a special blessing for mankind as is clear from a ââ¬ËHadith-e-Qudsiââ¬â¢: The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: ââ¬Å"God, the Exalted says: ââ¬ËFasting is (exclusively) for me and I will reward it.â⬠Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (A.S.), the Eighth Imam quoted his ancestor the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) on the chain of authority of his noble forefathers: ââ¬Å"O people, anybody who in this month (Ramadan) cultivates good manners, will walk over the ââ¬ËSiraââ¬â¢ (Paradiseââ¬â¢s bridge) on the Day when feet will tend to slipâ⬠¦.â⬠The practices of Islamic fasting are designed to divert human mind towards righteousness through a process of self-denials. Fasting constitutes a process of self-purification, self-righteousness, and spiritual development of one self. Sawm also shows devotion to god through various other acts. An additional prayer is added in Ramadan called taraweeh.it is a Sunnah prayer and efforts are made to recite as much of the Quran as possible. This prayer is generally offered in congregation and those who cannot make it to the congregation pray it at home. This additional prayer prayed each day for 30 days shows love for god and how much we appreciate the guidance he sent through the Qurââ¬â¢an and how much we need god in our lives to show us the ââ¬Å"straight pathâ⬠. The night of power is also a way to show devotion to god as it was the night the Quran was revealed and so Muslims recite as much Quran as possible and perform other acts of Ibadah. This show devotion to god as many Muslims stay awake during the night so it shows our love for god as it says that the ummah will worship god and listen to him as he does to us. We will thank him and show devotion to him. The fasting person is training himself to remember that Allah (SWT) is always watching, so he gives up the things that he desires even though he is able to take them, because he knows that Allah (SWT) can see him. This shows devotion to god as it tells us that even though an individual would want to eat or do bad deeds as they can because it is in our control we do not as god has told us not to do it. This shows that the ummah will listen to god as we believe he provides and does everything we ask for us so we can do this for him. Another way muslins show devotion to god is through dua which is personal prayer to god. Many Muslims carry out this personal prayer in Ramadan after all the 5 prayers or in the morning before the fajr prayer when Muslims perform a Sunnah prayer called tahajud. This shows devotion to god as it show that Muslims are willing to wake up or stay awake just to please Allah and worship him as he fulfils our prayers so we must ask more and praise him during this. ââ¬ËSawm is more about uniting the Muslim community than about showing devotion to Allah.ââ¬â¢ Discuss? (10) Sawm is about showing devotion to Allah as In the holy month of Ramadan, a Muslimââ¬â¢s abstaining from food, drink, sexual intercourse, during the prescribed hours is the very devotion Muslimââ¬â¢s have to the Creatorââ¬â¢s will. This self-deprivation represents a state of self-control and of overcoming pleasure, desire, and enjoyment, for the blissful love of God. It is a triumph of pure love over oneââ¬â¢s pleasures for the eternal ones promised by God, the Almighty. This response to the commands of Allah represents and incarnates true devotion and is a brilliant display of spirit, intellect and decisive willpower. This purification allows them to prove their devotion to Allah by demonstrating they will honour the fast whether they are alone or with others, because it is His wish that they do so. . Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to their Creator, and recognize that everything we have in this life is a blessing from Him. Also Muslims celebrate the gift of Quran purely for the sake of Allah and to thank him for sending a guide to the Muslimââ¬â¢s. Ramadan is month were everyone recharges their spiritual batteries on for the sake of Allah and to have him be pleased with us and to forgive any previous sins. Sawm also is intended to strengthen the worldwide Ummah not merely in shared experience and practical provision but in contributing to the concept of spiritual unity and cohesive communal solidarity which is the hallmark of Islam. Through fasting the Muslims are able to share in their unity with each other and their community, and display their gratitude to God for being given the words of the Qurââ¬â¢an as they all as a community pray taraweeh and pray parts of the Quran collectively so all the young and all join in and realise the importance of the Muslim Ummah. In addition to this Muslimââ¬â¢s give their zakat or sadqa in the month of Ramadan as they also want those Muslimââ¬â¢s who cannot afford it to have the best Ramadan possible and it helps them also identify the poor and realise that as they are also Muslimââ¬â¢s it is our duty to help them. Mosque receivers is a way the Muslim community comes together as women and children in the home can listen top talks and speeches in the home so they donââ¬â¢t miss out on any information about Islam and can also hear the prayers at home so they become part of the community swell. Muslims give food to one another so it shoes that we are all there for each other and we are am Muslim Ummah so muslinââ¬â¢s should give in this blessed month to friends, relatives to share the bond of Islam. However sawm is about showing devotion to god and worshiping him through fasting or praying but to do this Muslimââ¬â¢s come together as an Ummah to help one another and get more reward of carrying out the worship together. However each individual Muslim for doing good acts will get rewards for him but the reason it is done together is because the Ummah is important in Islam to keep it going.

Lorelei lee is describe herself as a feminist by birth, she was raised with feminism the same way are raised with religion. Lorelei is a pornstar who have been in the porn industry for over 10 years. She learned who she was in terms of her sexual and gender identity by pretending in a very exaggerated way, to be who she wasnt. To her, race, class, gender, and sexuality are not fixed systems or traits of individuals because they are negotiated and contested every day in social relationships. Lee stated that in 2003 there was a study conducted at Ohio Universi ty which revealed that women are just as interested in sex as the opposite gender. The study reported that womenââ¬â¢s (sexual activity) was closer to menââ¬â¢s than previously thought, meaning that women not only engage in sex often, but that they enjoy it just as much as men do. A troubling fact also came from the study was that ââ¬Å"women who thought their (sexual history) might be seen by others tended to give answers that were more socially acceptableâ⬠, meaning women still fell the societal pressure to hide their sexuality. This is why she believed pornography was good for women because of the sexually explicit imagery in which women are shown giving performative demonstrations of their own sexual power is imagery that can transform the cultural paradigm and ultimately change the world and have the no shame in letting their pattners know what and how to please them sexuality. When women managers fail to promote other women because they believe that women are less capable than men. They also reinforce structures of race, class, gender, and sexuality dominanc. The same structure that have restricted their own lives. Lee introduced a shift in sexual standards for women, but she structured hierarchies of race, class and gender remained firmly intact. The middle class and working class faced very different expectations due to differing circumstances. According to Lorelei Every social situation is affected by

The days of the barefoot woman forced to stay in the kitchen and bedroom are over. Womenââ¬â¢s liberation has gained voice in the last century and has emancipated many women, bringing them into the realization that they are not subservient to men. As this thought process becomes more widely spread, more and more women are seeing the truth of it. In the short stories Shiloh and The Astronomerââ¬â¢s Wife this theme of realization and liberation is dominant. In the story Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Mason we are introduced to Norma Jean.
